About Us

Boy Scout Troop 649 is chartered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10049, and is located in Simi Valley, California.

Troop 649 was founded in 1997 in Simi Valley, California. It is chartered and supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post # 10049. Troop 649 is an all-round adventure troop, with past and current activities that include backpacking, deep-sea fishing, zip-lining, rock climbing, rocket launching, kayaking, whale watching, and Boy Scout summer camp.

Troop 649 has a “Scout-led” program, where Scouts select their activities, plan, and conduct their own meetings. We strongly encourage our Scouts to reach the rank of First Class in 13 to 18 months. After that point, almost all our Scouts continue on to Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in Scouting. Troop 649 has a strong tradition of graduating Scouts who retain the knowledge and outdoor skills learned as they rank up.

Cyber Chip

As we discussed at the meeting tonight, here are the details of Cyber Chip:
This is a new and mandatory training about using the Internet that we will do as a troop. The requirements depend on grade level (see links below) and need to be completed yearly. Be Cyber Chip certified is required for both Tenderfoot and Star ranks.
We will do most of the requirements as a troop, however there are some things that need to be done by the Scout and his family before our next meeting on Tuesday, 8/23:
  • Please go to the website found on the Cyber Chip card you received tonight (http://www.nsteens.org/Quizzes/NSTeensChallenge) and complete the course. Email your certificate of completion to both Doug (doug-forman@att.net) and Susan (heckofadj@sbcglobal.net).
    • You must also read and sign the pledge on the back of the card
  • Have a talk with your parents about “netiquette” and how to use the Internet.
    • Grades 9-12: Discuss with your parents the benefits and potential dangers teenagers might experience when using social media. Give examples of each.
  • Write and sign a personalized contract with your parent or guardian that outlines rules for using the computer and mobile devices, including what you can download, what you can post, and consequences for inappropriate use. Please bring this contract to the next troop meeting.
Please feel free to look over the requirements and watch the videos on your own. The requirements outlined above are 1 and 2 (Grades 6-8) and 1, 2, and 3 (Grades 9-12). We will do requirements 3, 4, and 5 (Grades 6-8) and 4, 5, and 6 (Grades 9-12) at the next meeting.
