Cyber Chip

As we discussed at the meeting tonight, here are the details of Cyber Chip:
This is a new and mandatory training about using the Internet that we will do as a troop. The requirements depend on grade level (see links below) and need to be completed yearly. Be Cyber Chip certified is required for both Tenderfoot and Star ranks.
We will do most of the requirements as a troop, however there are some things that need to be done by the Scout and his family before our next meeting on Tuesday, 8/23:
  • Please go to the website found on the Cyber Chip card you received tonight ( and complete the course. Email your certificate of completion to both Doug ( and Susan (
    • You must also read and sign the pledge on the back of the card
  • Have a talk with your parents about “netiquette” and how to use the Internet.
    • Grades 9-12: Discuss with your parents the benefits and potential dangers teenagers might experience when using social media. Give examples of each.
  • Write and sign a personalized contract with your parent or guardian that outlines rules for using the computer and mobile devices, including what you can download, what you can post, and consequences for inappropriate use. Please bring this contract to the next troop meeting.
Please feel free to look over the requirements and watch the videos on your own. The requirements outlined above are 1 and 2 (Grades 6-8) and 1, 2, and 3 (Grades 9-12). We will do requirements 3, 4, and 5 (Grades 6-8) and 4, 5, and 6 (Grades 9-12) at the next meeting.

Summer Meeting Schedule

Due to summer vacation, Santa Susana Elementary School (our usual meeting place) is closed. We are now meeting at Lemon Park (Rancho Tapo Community Park) at 6:30 PM every other Tuesday beginning 07-07-2015. These are Class B (any Scouting t-shirt) meetings.


Once school resumes (first day 08-17-2015), we will return to Santa Susana Elementary School for our normal meeting schedule (every Tuesday beginning 08-18-2015 at 6:30 PM, Class A).

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops

ILST training for Troop 649 scouts will be conducted this Fall. The first module on Unit Organization is scheduled for troop meeting on 10/21/14.

“The purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops course is to teach Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Boy Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Boy Scouts and is a replacement for Troop Leadership Training. Completion of Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops is a prerequisite for Boy Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is also required to participate in a Kodiak Challenge Trek.”

Troop Elections

Troop elections will be held on the Business Meeting (11/5). THERE ARE POSITIONS THAT NEED TO BE FILLED:

If you have a position currently, and you would be relieved of said position, please let our Troop Scribe know before the meeting (if you can) so  he can arrange the elections accordingly. BE THINKING ABOUT ANY POSITIONS YOU WANT/DO NOT WANT ANYMORE…Thanks!

Our Annual Planning Meeting is Sunday, August 25 at 1:00 PM.  Immediately following will be our Family Cookout and Soakfest.

Bring your ideas to our Troop 649 Annual Planning Meeting.  As usual, we’ll set up the whiteboard and create an exciting plan for the upcoming year’s events.  BRING CHAIRS for all Family members!  We’ve done a pretty thorough yet efficient job of it in years past with events that made other Troops envious.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this year!
Our Annual Family Cookout and Soakfest immediately follows the Planning Meeting.
